Coach Coby De Been has been surrounded by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) her entire life. With her father being Australia’s first black belt in the sport, Coby was practically born on the mats. From a young age, she was immersed in the techniques, discipline, and mindset of BJJ, training and competing throughout her childhood, which has given her a deep understanding of the sport. She has also had the unique opportunity to train at the renowned Gracie Barra Matriz Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This experience helped her connect with the roots of BJJ, refining her technique and deepening her appreciation for the sport’s culture.
Currently a dedicated purple belt, Coach Coby brings her years of experience to the students, making her an exceptional coach for both kids and adults. Her ability to relate to young competitors, having been one herself, allows her to create a supportive and motivating environment for children starting their own journeys in BJJ. She knows firsthand the challenges of stepping onto the mat as a young athlete and uses this knowledge to guide kids with patience and encouragement. For adult students, she blends technical and a relaxed teaching style, creating a welcoming atmosphere that makes learning fun and effective.
Beyond her coaching, Coby plays an active role in the BJJ community. She organizes and runs competitions for the Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, supporting and promoting the sport she’s grown up with. In her downtime, Coby stays active through workouts and loves spending time at the beach, keeping a balanced lifestyle outside the gym.
Coach Coby’s energy, dedication, and experience make her a respected and cherished member of Australia’s BJJ community, inspiring students and contributing to the sport’s growth across the country.
